Sani Stagger Trail Runs

The Stagger Trail is a one day Trail Run with a choice of two distances : 38km / 21km

Based at the Premier Resort Sani Pass and run in conjunction with the Sani Stagger road marathon and half-marathon, the Stagger Trail traverses a number of the most iconic trails in the surrounding Maloti Drakensberg World Heritage Site.

Both routes are characterised by genuine mountain trail with occasional technical sections and some challenging climbs which make for a truly authentic trail running experience.

CLOUDS OF HOPE

During your entry process you have the option of making a donation to the Clouds of Hope Childrens' Centre. Clouds of Hope Childrens' Centre is based in Underberg and is a vital organization within the community. It is now in its 21st year, and is home to 69 babies, children and youths who have been affected by HIV, abuse, neglect or abandonment.

CoH desperately relies on donations every year to keep going. We request you please help and donate to this amazing organization so it can stay strong and continue to change as many young lives as possible

  • ST38 (Sani Stagger Trail Run 38km)

    The ST38 has a fast open start down to the Mkomazana Waterfall before runners enter the trail on which they will spend 95% of their run.

    An undulating section of 5km leads them into the mouth of the Gxalingenwa Gorge where they will climb steadily for the next 4km before joining the Giant’s Cup Trail for a brief section. A fast, flat leg along the Stromness Ridge is followed by the short steep descent back down to the Waterfall after which the big climb of the day looms ahead. The steepest part of the climb is the first 2km after which it undulates steadily upward for the next 5km eventually topping out onto the Khanti Ridge where the views and vistas of the Southern Drakensberg are unparalleled.

    It’s then straight into the switchbacks which plunge down for 3km onto the Sani Pass Road where the runners will rub shoulders for a brief section with the roadies before turning off into the Giant’s Cup Trail. After 4km on the legendary Giant’s Cup Trail it’s the fast and technical descent down the magnificent Gxalingenwa before crossing under the road and onto the Golf Course to the finish.

  • ST21 (Sani Stagger Trail Run 21km)

  • General Race Rules

    • All entrants will have a timing chip on their Sani Stagger Race number which must not be covered / pinned through.

    • Minimum age limits are 16 years for the 21.1km and 20 years for the 42.2km

    • Minimum age limits are 16 years for the Stagger Trail 21km and 18 years for the Stagger Trail 38km

    • All entrants are to PERSONALLY collect their registration numbers, timing chips at registration venue, the Underberg Country Club

    • Registration packs will not be handed over to any third party. Registration packs are for athletes who have come to registration ONLY. Anyone withdrawing from the race and does NOT intend running will NOT receive the registration pack. We remind you that entries are neither refundable NOR transferable.

    • All entrants participate at their own risk and organisers and sponsors will not be responsible for any loss or injury incurred during or as a result of the race. The organisers and sponsors will not be responsible for any property lost or damaged on the course or in the changing area.

    • The event provides Medical Support for all runners. Should a runner require additional Medical Support, over and above that provided by the Event, this will be for the Runner’s personal expense

    • All medical / paramedic costs are for the entrants own account. The organisers will not pay these nor be responsible for the costs. All entrants will be personally required to sign an indemnity at registration. These may not be signed by a 3rd party.

    • Well stocked Aid Stations, with Nutrition and Hydration, will be provided along the 21.1km and 42.2km routes at an approximate interval of 3km

    • Aid Stations for the Stagger Trail runs are located as described on the website and route profile

    • No seconding whatsoever is permitted and you may be disqualified.

    • This is a World Heritage Site and no littering will be tolerated. Rubbish Bins are provided at the Aid Stations and please make use of them. No disposal of litter between Aid Stations will be permitted. IF YOU LITTER, YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

    • All Finishers in all events will receive a medal.

    • Lunches, light snacks and drinks will be on sale at the Premier Resort Sani Pass. You are NOT allowed to bring your own food and drinks into the hotel grounds.

    • There will be no refund of entry fee nor any other costs should the race have to be cancelled for any reason beyond the organisers control e.g. severe weather conditions.

  • Compulsory Gear

    All entrants must bring a weather proof running jacket to the race as in the event that conditions are cold and wet these jackets will be made a compulsory item.

    Conservation is a subject close to the heart of Running Man Adventures and as a result we take our environmental footprint very seriously. In light of this Stagger Trail will be a ‘cup free’ event and all runners will be required to carry their own cup or bottle for use on the trail and at the water tables.

    Please ensure that you bring your own cup or bottle to the event.

  • ​​​​​​​Race Entry Information

    • Entries are not refundable after the closing of entries date on 13 October 2024 and the transfer of entries is not permitted

    • Apparel is refunded at the full price less the ROAG commission/admin fee. No Apparel refunds after 13 October 2024.

    • You are NOT allowed to sell your entry to someone else. If you do the entry will be null and void.

    • Proof of ID will be required at registration.

    • Entry fees do not include any apparel. Event apparel can be ordered and paid for until 13 October 2024.

  • Refund Policy

    Refund policy is 90% until close of entries and then nothing after that except Medical Refund which is 85% and must have supporting Docs.

    Merch Refund is 95% until close of entries, after entries close there will be no more refunds.

    No refunds for event cancellation due to force majeure.

    Clouds of Hope Childrens' Centre is based in Underberg and is a vital organization within the community.  In its 21st year now, CoH is home to 69 babies, children and youths who have been affected by HIV, abuse, neglect or abandonment.

    Every child that is fostered into the CoH centre grows up in a safe, nurturing environment within one of our 12 cottages - each with a dedicated house mother who legally fosters those in her care.

    As well as safe shelter, CoH ensures that each child receives medical care, nourishing food, the best affordable education and that they remember to smile and laugh again.

    CoH desperately relies on donations every year to keep going.  Please help this amazing organization to stay strong and continue to change as many young lives as possible.

  • General Information

    Cut-offs:

    • ST38 has two cut-offs, 3.5hrs at 17km and 6hrs at 28km.

    • ST21 has one cut-off of 3hrs 15min at 11km
