Sani Stagger 21.1km

The race takes place along the 21km gravel road of Sani Pass, on the magnificent scenic route between the Lesotho Border Post and the Premier Resort Sani Pass. The 21.1km starts at the Lesotho Border Post and is run down to the finish line at the Premier Resort Sani Pass.

Runners are shuttled up to the start in 4x4’s by Major Adventures, a local Sani Pass tour operator. The drive up the pass is approximately 2 hours. It's an adventure on its own and a bucket list item for every South African!

The race route has been measured by an ASA and International Registered Course Measurer taking the shortest route along the course. Please bear in mind that the route is rocky, and uneven in places and you may not be able to take the shortest route.

CLOUDS OF HOPE

During your entry process you have the option of making a donation to the Clouds of Hope Childrens' Centre. Clouds of Hope Childrens' Centre is based in Underberg and is a vital organization within the community. It is now in its 21st year, and is home to 69 babies, children and youths who have been affected by HIV, abuse, neglect or abandonment.

CoH desperately relies on donations every year to keep going. We request you please help and donate to this amazing organization so it can stay strong and continue to change as many young lives as possible

Other Information About Event

  • General Race Rules

    • All entrants will have a timing chip on their Sani Stagger Race number which must not be covered / pinned through.

    • Minimum age limits are 16 years for the 21.1km and 20 years for the 42.2km

    • Minimum age limits are 16 years for the Stagger Trail 21km and 18 years for the Stagger Trail 38km

    • All entrants are to PERSONALLY collect their registration numbers, timing chips at registration venue, the Underberg Country Club

    • Registration packs will not be handed over to any third party. Registration packs are for athletes who have come to registration ONLY. Anyone withdrawing from the race and does NOT intend running will NOT receive the registration pack. We remind you that entries are neither refundable NOR transferable.

    • All entrants participate at their own risk and organisers and sponsors will not be responsible for any loss or injury incurred during or as a result of the race. The organisers and sponsors will not be responsible for any property lost or damaged on the course or in the changing area.

    • The event provides Medical Support for all runners. Should a runner require additional Medical Support, over and above that provided by the Event, this will be for the Runner’s personal expense

    • All medical / paramedic costs are for the entrants own account. The organisers will not pay these nor be responsible for the costs. All entrants will be personally required to sign an indemnity at registration. These may not be signed by a 3rd party.

    • Well stocked Aid Stations, with Nutrition and Hydration, will be provided along the 21.1km and 42.2km routes at an approximate interval of 3km

    • Aid Stations for the Stagger Trail runs are located as described on the website and route profile

    • No seconding whatsoever is permitted and you may be disqualified.

    • This is a World Heritage Site and no littering will be tolerated. Rubbish Bins are provided at the Aid Stations and please make use of them. No disposal of litter between Aid Stations will be permitted. IF YOU LITTER, YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

    • Prize giving subject to Covid Regulations. Details TBC

    • All Finishers in all events will receive a medal.

    • Lunches, light snacks and drinks will be on sale at the Premier Resort Sani Pass. You are NOT allowed to bring your own food and drinks into the hotel grounds.

    • There will be no refund of entry fee nor any other costs should the race have to be cancelled for any reason beyond the organisers control e.g. severe weather conditions.

  • Shuttles

    Shuttles to the Start:

    All 21.1km runners are taken up Sani Pass, to the start at the Lesotho Border Post, in shuttles.

    Shuttles are included in the entry fees.

    It’s approx a 2-hour drive up the pass, and one of the most scenic passes in South Africa to see!

    Upon arriving at the top, runners receive rusks, cookies, tea and coffee before the start.

  • Registration

    Registration will be at the Underberg Country Club from 11:00 to 20:00 on Friday, November 10th. There will be no late Registration on the Saturday morning of the race. You will need to produce your ID at registration and you may not register on someone else’s behalf. This is for a number of good reasons, including medical safety and Covid protocols.

    Parking at registration will be on the Cricket Field in front of the Clubhouse, please follow the signs and marshalls. The Country Club has a restaurant and bar and the local community will appreciate any support that you can provide.

  • ​​​​​​​Race Entry Information

    • Entries are not refundable after the closing of entries date (20th October) and the transfer of entries is not permitted

    • Apparel is refunded at the full price less the ROAG commission/admin fee. No Apparel refunds after 20th October 5pm.

    • You are NOT allowed to sell your entry to someone else. If you do the entry will be null and void.

    • Proof of ID will be required at registration.

    • Entry fees do not include any apparel. Event apparel can be ordered and paid for until 20th October 5pm.

  • Race Apparel

    You will be able to collect all pre-ordered apparel at Registration. There will be a limited amount of additional apparel available for sale, both at Registration and on Race Day near the Start/Finish.

  • Refund Policy

    Refund policy is 90% until close of entries and then nothing after that except Medical Refund which is 85% and must have supporting Docs.

    Merch Refund is 95% until close of entries, after entries close there will be no more refunds.

    Refunds regarding Positive Covid test will be 70% and proof of this is required.

    No refunds for event cancellation due to force majeure.

  • Passport Information

    Runners do not require passports.

    Runners only require passports if they are staying overnight at the top and they will then need to go through the South African and Lesotho Border passport control.

    During the race only ATHLETES and OFFICIALS will be given access via the SA Border Control.

    Should you wish to visit Sani Top you will need to carry your passport and you will need to be processed through South Africa and Lesotho Border Controls. You may be arrested for illegal entry should you cross through the field and fences.

    NOTE: No vehicles will be permitted on the route unless authorised to transport runners. Please adhere to this rule so as to avoid disqualification

  • Environment

    Sani Stagger takes place in the Maloti Drakensberg World Heritage Site.

    We urge all runners to make use of the refuse bins provided throughout the route.

    This is a very serious matter and runners found littering will be disqualified from the race.

  • COVID-19 Refund Guarantee

    We are well aware of the uncertain times in which we live and how this can affect our ability to make decisions and commit to things such as events.

    In this regard we would like to assure you that you can enter the Sani Stagger or Stagger Trail secure in the knowledge of a guaranteed 70% refund should the event be forced to cancel for Covid related reasons.
