“It’s gravel, with a bit of growl!” - Mountain Bikes are welcome!
Burg Wheelers Cycling Club is proud to present the 2nd annual COMPENDIUM GRAVEL GROWL on Sunday 25 August from the Curry’s Post Primary School.
Curry’s Post is an untapped cycling gem in the KZN Midlands, nestled between the popular Karkloof Valley and Nottingham Road and offers some of the best cycling terrain in the KZN Midlands.
Burg Wheelers Cycling Club is one of KZN’s biggest cycling clubs and is based in Pietermaritzburg. With a growing interest in off-road cycling, commonly known as ‘gravel grinding’ the club decided to organise a gravel event to expose this relatively new discipline to more riders and share some of the beautiful ‘country roads’ the KZN Midlands has to offer. The routes have been carefully selected by experienced gravel riders who understand what makes for an enjoyable and memorable ride !
The Curry’s Post community have backed the event 100% and are pulling out all the stops to welcome us to their area and showcase the many attractions they have to offer. Proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the Curry’s Post Primary School and the Curry’s Post Conservancy.
The event offers affordable entry fees, carefully planned routes, well stocked water tables, some great prizes and lucky draws and an overall value-for-money package. And hopefully a perfect Spring day for riding.
The event will start and finish at the Curry’s Post School (just past Terbodore, at the end of the Curry’s Post Road) and will comprise three race distances; 85km, 48km and 28km. The 85km is made up of two loops with the first loop of about 40km returning to the start finish area before heading out for the second loop, which doubles as the 48km loop. Both the 85km and 48km make use of district and forestry roads and a few jeep tracks, suitable for gravel bikes and mountain bikes. The 28km takes in a shorter version of the second 48km and will cater for the youngsters and those new to cycling and keen on a more gentle gravel ride experience.
We look forward to welcoming you to CURRY’S POST on Sunday 25th August!

Route Description: 85km
The 85km comprises two different loops to create a figure eight effect. The first 37km loop comprises the ‘western
front’ and takes riders on a testing route with over one thousand meters of ascent over district, forestry and farm
roads before returning to the Curry’s Post School. There will be one refreshment table at around the 30km point. The
second loop, namely the ‘eastern front’ incorporates more of the Karkloof valley side and doubles as the 48km race.
The complete 85km route is testing and only suitable for more experienced riders.
Route Description: 45km
The 48km route (and second half of the 85km race) heads out from the Curry’s Post School over a gentle incline,
followed by a long descent and some lovely rolling terrain on forestry roads before facing a gradual ascent back to
the finish. The total climbing is about 850m and there will be one water table at approximately 20km (or approx.
65km for the 85km).
This event doubles as the Hattons Cycles E-Bike Dash, with great prizes for the top three men and women home.
Route Description: 28km
The 28km route is a shortened version of the ‘eastern loop’ and follows a rolling descent for the first 12km before
climbing out the valley all the way back to the finish

Derestriction of E-bikes.
Whilst Burg Wheelers is encouraging e-bikes to participate in their Gravel Growl, it has come to the attention of the organisers that some competitors in some E-bike events are competing with derestricted bikes.
Any modifications to increase the motor's power or the speed at which assistance is provided (above the 32 km/h limit) are prohibited in this event. This includes software tweaks, hardware changes, or any devices that manipulate the speed sensor to bypass the restrictions.
For this reason, competitors with such modifications to their bikes will not be considered for the advertised prizes allocated to the E-bike category.
