Runners must complete a flat loop of 6.706 km every hour, on the hour. Each loop must be finished within 60 minutes. Any remaining time after completing a loop can be used to rest, eat, change gear, or recover. For example, if you finish a loop in 45 minutes, you have 15 minutes before the next loop begins — and you must be ready to start exactly on the hour.
The race continues until only two runners remain. From there, it's a head-to-head battle. One runner will eventually fail to complete a loop within the hour or choose to stop — at which point the other runner, provided he or she completes the final loop within the time limit, is declared the winner. The runner-up is known as The Assist.
All other participants in the Backyard Ultra receive a DNF (Did Not Finish) medal or gift — a nod to the brutal nature of the event.
Note for the 1st Edition:
For the first edition of The Loop Backyard Ultra at Domaine de Labourdonnais, we target on having a same loop for day and night, in the sugar cane fields and tracks on the Domaine. The format will allow runners to keep the ‘trail-kind’ experience.
